Do you know a lot about Lisbon?
I have to admit that before landing in Lisbon and knew just a bit about portuguese people and the Portugal. I think that most of us had only a few ideas and connotations about sandy beaches in the south of the country (Algarve).
It is also true that most of us still connect Spain with Portugal and we still believe that the culture, the language, adn the cuisine are very similar.
My knowledge about the the culture and the history of Portugal was below zero. To me, Lisbon and Portugal were just a sunny country with huge beaches and a great place for vacations.
However, as soon as I arrived in Lisbon, I realized that I was almost ignorant about the reality of this place. The capital is not a place with sandy beaches, it a place full of history and mistery.
The arquitecture is Lisbon can is traditional and, at the same time, modern. The views are something that you can’t miss: the light of the city, the colours of the streets and the blue sky. Lisbon has several miradouros (viewpoints) that will offer you unforgetable moments (accompanied by a glass of wine ou a beer).
Portuguese gastronomy is fantastic and diverse. Very different from the spanish cuisine and, in my opinon, much better. Dishes have a remarkable arabic influence, rice is everywhere and fresh fish is an option that you have to try (and, of course, you can’t miss “bacalhau” – cod fish).
Lisbon is a multicultiral city, a place where you will meet people from many different countries. However, the capital still has a truly portuguese identity.
The language was a mystery with a lot of “sh” sounds, at the beggining it sound almost like russian. However, after a few weeks portuguese began to sound less strange and I was impressed with the number of words that i could understand.
