The “Fado” in the Capital of Portugal – Lisbon!
There are 2 diferent types of Fado in city of Lisbon: the one from the capital and the one from Coimbra (in the center of the country).
Lisbon: fado is always sung by a solo performer
Coimbra: fado is usually performed by groups of university students.
Fado is always about topics related with love and pains and talks about sadness and longing for things that were lost in the past.
The Fado from Coimbra also contains humor and political topics
No one agrees (not even experts) on the origin of this type of Music. The word FADO comes from the Latin fatum (which means fate). Some people believe it cames from the Moorish occupation while other people believe it is related with African dance in Brazil.
If you have decided to visite Lisbon, you must spend a night at a “Casa de Fado” or Fado restaurante! There are many options everywhere but the most authentic can be found in na old part the city called “Alfama”.

How does it look like? It is a kind of a village around the Castle (São Jorge). Some people (locals) will tell you that this is the best or the worst place to live in the city (depending on the person that will answer your question).
Who lives in Alfama and Graça? Pensioners that have been living in this area of the city for generations, foreign people and single and youn people.
Positive points: An unique and great atmosphere and fantastic rivers perspectives! The best houses can be found next to the church.
Negatives points: Busy, very busy! You can’t drive or park a car in this area. Flats are almost always small.
