Lisbon brief history

Lisbon emerged as a nation state in the 12th century and is one of the world’s oldest cities in the world.
It is a city that was founded with the name of Ulysses or Olissopo and has its origin in the world “Allis Ubbo” that means Enchanting Port. The legend tells that it is from here that Lisbon got its name.
During the Roman period, the capital of Portugal became a very importante city in the Peninsula and was renamed Felicitas.
In the XVII century (714 ac) the Moors resisted against Christian attacks during 500 years. It took the Christian sone century to send away all the Moors from the city of Lisbon.
During the discovies era that started on the 15th century, Lisbon enjoyed abundant prosperity. The capital of Portugal was, by that time, world’s most powerful trading city.
But this period didn’t take a long time as the earthquake of the year 1755 destroyed the city.
The city was rebuilt by the Marquês de Pombal that created the famous Baixa (the downtown area). In the 20th century, Lisbon spread to the North and other new areas of the city as Avenidas Novas.
Lisbon was captured in the XIX century by the french Bonaparte and most of its treasures were stolen and destroyed.
The capital of Portugal reborn again after the new king returned to the capital, being extended to the north of the city.
Nowadays, the capital of Portugal is probably the most beautiful city of Europe and keeps the marks of its great history!
