COLOURS IN PORTUGUESE

This is one of the vocabulary lists that Portuguese language students appreciate the most. The colors in Portuguese are simple and fun!  Notice that some colors, when used as an adjective, have four options: Example: Preto (black), preta, pretos, and pretas – Singular/Plural, Masculine/Feminine. However, we have other colors that have only one option for singular and another option for plural, with the masculine and feminine forms being the same; Example: Verde (singular masculine and feminine) and verdes (plural masculine and feminine). Finally, we have some colors that have only one option regardless of whether we use them to qualify a singular/plural noun or masculine/feminine; for Example: “cor-de-rosa” (pink).

PRO TIP: My experience as a Portuguese teacher tells me that the color “Cinzento” – grey, is usually the word that students have the most difficulty memorizing.
