present subjunctive level B1 portuguese

CONECTORES DE CONJUNTIVO (condição)

It is important to mention the connector “CASO= in case” and “SEM QUE = without.” These are two connectors that we use quite often but have an alternative in the personal infinitive. Namely, “CASO-Present Subjunctive” and “no caso de-Personal Infinitive.” Also, “SEM QUE-Present Subjunctive” and “sem-Personal Infinitive.” Is there any difference? Strictly none! Sometimes we use the present subjunctive, and then immediately after, we use the personal infinitive, and the meaning of the sentences is precisely the same.

Here’s an example:

a. (presente do conjuntivo) Caso vás à praia liga-me! = In case you go to the beach, call me!

b. (infinitivo pessoal) No caso de ires à praia liga-me! = In case you go to the beach, call me!

PRO TIP: Despite this list being composed of words (connectors) that we use quite frequently in Portuguese, it is worth noting that, in our opinion, the most important connectors are not the ones that follow, but rather the connectors you can find in List 6 – Present Subjunctive (essential connectors). These are the ones we use daily and with greater frequency.
