LEARNING PORTUGUESE – ESSENTIAL VERBS

Embarking on the journey to learn Portuguese initiates a complex process, involving numerous crucial decisions. Typically, one of the initial choices made by Portuguese learners is to acquire a manual for learning and teaching the Portuguese language.

Upon cracking open the Portuguese textbook for the inaugural time, the student is promptly confronted with a pivotal inquiry. Where does one begin? Is it imperative to commit all this information to memory? Must every verb table be memorized? Should attention be directed towards prepositions? And what about numbers – are they indispensable? Should one prioritize cardinal or ordinal numbers? As for phonetics, is it necessary to internalize the rules elucidating each sound? Additionally, when should articles be employed? The uncertainties abound, and lacking an experienced teacher, defining a path to success becomes a formidable challenge.

There are several CRUCIAL elements to learn in the Portuguese language. In this article, we will discuss just one: which Portuguese verbs, in our opinion, are essential! Come along with us!

REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS IN PORTUGUESE

Let’s start with the verb tenses in Portuguese. There are many in the Portuguese language, but an A1 level student (beginner) should ALWAYS start with the present tense.

It is fundamental to know what distinguishes a regular verb from an irregular verb in the Portuguese language. Regular verbs are those that are always conjugated in the same way. The endings we use are always the same. Thus, all students who know how to conjugate a regular verb, necessarily know how to conjugate all regular verbs.

REGULAR VERBS IN THE PRESENT TENSE IN PORTUGUESE

In the “PRESENTE do INDICATIVO” there are three types of regular verbs:

VERBS ENDING in -AR. Examples: trabalhar, morar, estudar, comprar.

VERBS ENDING in -ER. Examples: comer, beber.

VERBS ENDING in-IR. Example: partir

IRREGULAR VERBS IN THE PRESENT TENSE

Within the Portuguese language, a lengthy roster of irregular verbs exists in the present tense. Should a student at the A1 level commit all of them to memory? In our perspective, the answer is no; learners of Portuguese need not attempt to memorize every irregular verb. However, there are four verbs that every student should grasp as promptly as possible: SER, ESTAR, TER, and IR. All other irregular verbs can be acquired through exposure to the language. Students should initiate regular communication, gradually solidifying their grasp of conjugations in a more organic manner. Now, let’s delve into the conjugation of these four essential verbs!

The significance of regular verbs and these four irregular verbs is TREMENDOUS in the development of Portuguese students. From the very first day of class, we CONVEY this opinion to our students. We consistently assess them to ensure that everyone is adept at these conjugations. If you are studying Portuguese, heed our advice and commit these conjugations to memory! It is one of the fundamentals of the Portuguese language!

Frederico is one of the best teachers that I have encountered during my adult life. He explained the Portuguese language in a way that helped me to understand the language better and once you have an understanding it is much easier to learn. I also enjoyed the class interaction. I did an online course and that just didn't work as well for me. I needed the in-person teaching and the opportunity to actually speak in a safe environment. I highly recommend Frederico's classes.

I took the A1 course here and really enjoyed Frederico's teaching style and method. The course materials were very organized and there was a good mix of grammer and exercises to keep the course interesting. The learning tools on the web site are really helpful. I highly recommend Lisbon Language Cafe'.

I highly recommend taking your portuguese language class(es) at The Lisbon Language Cafe. Our teacher, Frederico is extremely knowledgable of the language, he explains the particulars with clarity and examples, and I have to add, with much enjoyment and patience. My wife and I signed up for the A1 course and it was work we loved doing, both in class and at home (homework is essential) This three week session gave us so much information and understanding of the tools to be able to correctly pronounce, compose (simple) sentences, along with reading and listening skills tailored to our A1 level. The classes are small and students participate in the activities, it is very proactive, fun and the perfect start on our journey to truly learn the language and the confidence to one day hold a conversation with our fellow portuguese. Thank you so much Frederico.

I took the A1 intensive course at Lisbon Language Cafe, and it was an excellent experience. With only seven students in class, each of us got full attention from the wonderful teacher, Frederico. I have learned other languages in the past, and I can say that this course is the exact thing you need to open up to the Portuguese language. It gives you the tools to take the first step not only in speaking the language but also in understanding the culture and life in Portugal. I highly recommend it!

I took the 3 week A1 course with Frederico at Lisbon Language Cafe and I really loved it. I learnt so much and he explained things so well and so clearly. With only 6 students per class we all got plenty of opportunity to practice speaking. Best of all, the classes were fun! Highly recommended.

This was a great A1 course! Thanks to this course, my reluctance to start speaking has greatly improved. I learned the basics and structure of the language, which provided an important foundation to build on, and I was able to have small, simple conversations as the course progressed. Frederico made learning fun and effective.

My wife and I took the 3 week A1 Portuguese lessons with Lisbon Language cafe. We loved it! It was important for us to find a small class size so we’d be able to participate and receive frequent feedback. And only 3 weeks later we already find ourselves confident in using the language in public. We plan on signing up for the next A2 course ASAP. Obrigado!
