HOW TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN PORTUGUESE

This list of expressions in Portuguese is one of the most searched for by those learning the Portuguese language. The following list, in addition to covering verbs and everyday expressions, also includes new grammatical content at level A2: direct object pronouns!

Often, Portuguese language students don’t know whether they’re dealing with a reflexive verb or a verb with a direct (or indirect) object pronoun. Do you know how to distinguish these two grammar topics?

PRO TIP: When dealing with a reflexive verb, there’s only one subject involved in the action. For example: “Eu lavo-me” = I wash myself, “tu chamas-te Pedro” = you call yourself Pedro. On the other hand, when dealing with a verb with a direct (or indirect) object pronoun, there are two subjects involved in the action. Example: Eu AMO-TE (in this case, we have the subject “Eu” and the subject “Tu”). Another example: tu LAVAS-ME (we have the subject “TU” and the subject “EU” represented by the pronoun “ME”).
