LEARNING STUDIO - LEVEL B1

present subjunctive level B1 portuguese

PRESENTE DO CONJUNTIVO vs INFINITIVO PESSOAL

The personal infinitive and the present subjunctive are two structures that need to be studied together, as both structures have similar connectors and carry exactly the same meaning.

Here are some examples:

1.a- É BOM TERES saúde! (infinitivo pessoal) =It’s good that you have health!

1.b- É BOM QUE TENHAS saúde! (present subjunctive) = It’s good that you have health!

Here’s a second example:

1.a- PARA COMPRARES uma casa, precisas de ter dinheiro. = To buy a house, you need to have money;

1.b- PARA QUE COMPRES uma casa, precisas de ter dinheiro. = To buy a house, you need to have money.

The previous sentences have precisely the same meaning, and neither option is more or less commonly used than the other. Both are used by Portuguese speakers in the same way.

In the following list of words, you will find a large number of examples of sentences with (often) identical connectors but with equal value/meaning.
