The INDICATIVE includes the verbal structures that allow us to talk about facts, about real and concrete things. Examples: 1-Yesterday I went to the cinema – FACT (simple past); 2-I have three cats – FACT (present tense); 3-Tomorrow I will work from home – FACT (future). Throughout levels A1 and A2, students have learned verbal structures of the Indicative, and these are the structures that we most often use in everyday conversations in Portuguese.
The SUBJUNCTIVE allows us to talk about doubts, possibilities, wishes, feelings, fears, and concerns. Examples: 1- Maybe I’ll go to the beach tomorrow (POSSIBILITY) – Present Subjunctive; 2- If you have time, call me (POSSIBILITY) – Future Subjunctive; 3- I hope she passes the exam (WISH) – Present Subjunctive.
PRO TIP: In summary, the INDICATIVE provides us with structures to talk about real things, and the SUBJUNCTIVE provides us with structures to talk about non-concrete/non-factual things. This is the guideline that distinguishes the subjunctive from the indicative, but of course, there are many exceptions and special cases that we will address during this course.
Here follows an activity where you can analyze some examples of sentences in the subjunctive and indicative.
