PORTUGUESE ALPHABET

Knowing the Portuguese alphabet is important! When you start speaking Portuguese, you will realize that sometimes Portuguese people won’t understand what you’re trying to say. This is because your Portuguese accent will be different from ours, or because you might stress the wrong syllable, or simply because the person you’re speaking to has difficulty understanding English names. In these cases, spelling correctly in Portuguese will help solve the problem. I would like to draw your particular attention to the following letters of the Portuguese alphabet: G (guê), H (agá), K (cápa), Q (quê), R (érre), and W (dabliu – just like in English). Spend some extra time on these letters and their specific sounds. Portuguese words do not include the following letters: K, W, Y. However, Portuguese people use many foreign words in their daily lives (some examples: deadline, yes, junkies), and some of these words that we mix with the Portuguese language have the letters K, W, and Y.
