The verb “IR” (to go) is another one of the four fundamental irregular verbs that all Portuguese language students must know perfectly. Why is the verb “IR” so important? In addition to us going to many different places every day and needing to use the verb to express that, we also use the verb “IR” to talk about the future.
FORMULA FOR THE FUTURE IN PORTUGUESE: IR + INFINITIVE.
Examples: 1-Tomorrow I am going to eat pizza = Amanhã eu vou comer pizza!; 2-Tomorrow you are going to drink a beer! = Amanhã tu vais beber uma cerveja!
Don’t forget that, in order to advance in your Portuguese, you need to know how to conjugate the following irregular verbs perfectly: SER (to be), TER (to have), ESTAR (to be), and IR (to go).
PRO TIP: Most of the time, Portuguese speakers use the previously taught structure (IR + INFINITIVE) to talk about the future. However, it is also possible to conjugate the verb IR in the future tense (structure taught during level B1).
