VOZ PASSIVA LEVEL B1 PORTUGUESE

VOZ PASSIVA DE AÇÃO

A passive voice of action is a reasonably complex structure, given that there are many possible transformations from active voice to passive voice.

But let’s start with some examples of the active voice:

Example 1 – “O João faz o trabalho de casa” (active voice, presente tense) = John does the homework. The transformation to the passive voice is: The homework is done by João.

Example 2– “A Maria limpou a casa” (active voice, simple past) = Maria cleaned the house. Transformation to the passive voice: A casa foi limpa pela Maria = The house was cleaned by Maria.

Example 3:  “Amanhã vou completar um trabalho importante”, (ative voice, future tense) = Tomorrow I will complete an importante task. The transformation to the passive voice is:  No dia seguinte um trabalho importante seria completado por mim = On the following day, an important task would be completed by me.

Notice how the subject changes its position from the active voice to the passive voice! We won’t go into lengthy grammatical explanations at this point because we believe that examples are better aids than repeating grammatical concepts that are already scattered across the internet.

PRO TIP: Of the many transformations from passive voice to active voice, let’s draw your attention to the one that is most commonly used in everyday conversations in Portuguese. The transformation from active voice with the verb in the present tense, for example: “Eu faço o almoço todos os dias” (active voice) to passive voice, for example: “O almoço é feito todos os dias por mim” (passive voice). Notice that in this transformation, we use the present tense of the verb ser (é) plus the past participle of the main verb (fazer » feito).

Here follows an activity with several examples of transformations from active voice to passive voice of action.
