Eduardo VII park of England (usually called only park Eduardo VII) is one of the most beautiful places in the city of Lisbon. The park covers an area of 25 hectares and extends beyond the famous Avenida da Liberdade.
EDUARDO VII PARK
Until 1902 it was called Parque da Liberdade. In 1903, its name was changed to Parque Eduardo VII of England. This change was due to the visit of the English politician to Portugal the previous year which aimed to reaffirm the alliance between Portugal and England. At the top of the park, since 2003, there has been a gigantic Portuguese flag. Interestingly, the suggestion of raising a flag in this place was given by a child of 8 years to the then president of the republic Jorge Sampaio.

It is here that every year several cultural events are organized to animate the city of Lisbon, the most important being the book fair and the Summer Jazz (outjazz) concerts.

WHERE IS EDUARDO VII PARK?
It is located in the heart of downtown Lisbon, next to the rotunda of the famous Marquês de Pombal. It is probably the most central place in the Portuguese capital.
HOW TO Get TO EDUARDO VII PARK?
Given its centrality, there are several options in terms of public transport, namely: bus, metro, taxi / ubber. We suggest using the metro option as it is a highly reliable and punctual means of transport.
WHAT TO DO AT EDUARDO VII PARK?
TAKE A WALK
Who doesn’t like to walk in a green space? The park is a great option for a good, refreshing walk. Its length and slope can be challenging, but the park’s benches are the solution for those who are not in the best physical shape. Alone or with company, be sure to take a stroll here.

HAVE A COFFEE
There are many cafes with a terrace in the Eduardo VII park. Great for drinking coffee, having a conversation with a friend or just being alone reading a book.

PRACTICE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
25 hectares (equivalent to 25 soccer fields), is enough space for a low, medium or high intensity run. There you will find flat and inclined spaces. Regardless of your current physical condition, the park has an option for you. There is also an old and famous health club (gym) called Clube VII on one side of the park. The gym offers a gym, swimming pool, tennis courts and a cafe / restaurant.

GO TO THE VIEWPOINT
Given its steep slope, at the top of the Park we have a beautiful and surprising view of the city of Lisbon, the river and also the south bank of the Tagus. If you like taking pictures, this is the perfect place!

MONUMENTS IN THE EDUARDO VII PARK
The monument to the 25 de Abril tribute is the most important (and controversial) piece of art in the park. It is a monument formed by stone structures that are spread over the water mirror. It is authored by the controversial João Cutileiro who once again created a work that has nothing consensual … Some call it art, others call it aberration … Visit it and draw your conclusions!

BOOK FAIR
The book fair is an annual event that has taken place in Lisbon since 1930. Throughout its 90 years of existence, the fair has passed through several locations, namely: Avenida da Liberdade, Praça Dom Pedro IV, Rua Augusta, Praça do Comércio and, of course, Parque Eduardo VII. It is usually held in the last days of May. It has the presence of more than two hundred publishers’ stands and many of the best Portuguese writers mark their presence. During the days of the fair, other cultural events such as concerts, autograph sessions and various shows also take place.

OUT JAZZ CONCERTS
Out Jazz concerts are held every year during the summer and take place in five gardens (parks) in the Portuguese capital. It is on Sunday afternoons (5pm) that magic happens! Parque Eduardo VII is a place where the concerts are held with broad support from the population of Lisbon.

GREENHOUSES AT THE EDUARDO VII PARK
The Cold Greenhouse (ESTUFA FRIA) is one of the most peaceful and pleasant places in Lisbon. It is a place where you will find waterfalls, caves, lakes and of course plants (this explains the name Cold Greenhouse). Different species of different sizes and origins live there. Species from Australia, Mexico, Brazil, China, Korea and many other remote countries. Also in the Eduardo VII park you can visit the warm greenhouse, covered with glass to maintain a high temperature. There you will find – among other species – banana trees, mango trees and coffee trees. And we can’t forget the Estufa Doce, a greenhouse that houses cacti. It is smaller but equally beautiful.
CARLOS LOPES PAVILION
The Carlos Lopes pavilion is halfway up the park. It was built in 1921 and was initially called the pavilion of industries. Later, it was renamed as the sports pavilion because it started to be used for sports activities. In 1984 it was renamed Carlos Lopes pavilion (a famous Portuguese marathon runner who won a gold medal in the Olympic Games). The space was practically abandoned for many years. Outside and inside you will find beautiful tiles, with the initial entrance tile panel standing out. The tiles represent a little of Portugal’s history because the battles of Ourique and Aljubarrota are represented there.

CHILDREN’S PARK
Children’s park is located between the cold greenhouse and the gym (club VII). It is a nice space that makes the joy of the little ones. Swings, slides, slides and a picnic area are a guarantee of a morning or an afternoon well spent. Parents can always get a drink at the kiosk at the entrance of the playground.

AMALIA RODRIGUES GARDEN
It was built in 1996, but it was in 2000 that it changed its name to Amália Rodrigues Garden (before it was called Alto do Parque). It is near the viewpoint at the top of the park and from there we have a magnificent view over the park, the river and the south bank of the Tagus. The garden has a beautiful round lake next to the famous café/esplanade “Linha d’água”. Very close to this garden (next to the Eleven restaurant) starts the green corridor that connects the Eduardo VII park to Monsanto.

WHAT TO VISIT NEAR EDUARDO VII PARK?
There are many attractions near Eduardo VII Park. So that you can organize your visit, we have prepared a map for you. We hope it will be useful!
LIBERDADE AVENUE
Expensive, elegant, and famous! This is the 35th most expensive avenue in the world, “our” Liberty Avenue. It was built at the end of the 19th century having as inspiration the “Champs-Elysées”. It is 1000 meters long and almost 100 meters wide. An imposing avenue that connects Restauradores Square to the Marquês de Pombal traffic circle. A place where we delight in gardens, statues, monuments, theaters, many fancy stores, historic elevators and more, much more! Click this link to read our article about Avenida da Liberdade.

RESTAURADORES SQUARE
It is next to the magnificent Rossio station that we find the Restauradores square. Right in the center of the square stands an imposing 30 meter tall giant obelisk. A monument that was built in 1886 and alludes to the liberation of the Portuguese from the Spanish kingdom. The square is very wide and surrounded by very beautiful and ancient buildings. A special word for Palácio Foz (today a tourist office) and for the old cinema EDEN that was transformed into the present Orion Eden Hotel. A must-see in Lisbon!

PORTAS DE SANTO ANTÃO STREET
Rua das Portas de Santo Antão is one of Lisbon’s mythical streets! It is small but contains an impressive number of Lisbon stories that are worth knowing and investigating. A street that embraces the new and the old, the luxurious and the decadent, the Portuguese and the foreign, the past and the future! The waiters still stand at the doors of the restaurants trying to attract the attention of customers. Everyone and everything passes by: tourists, local people, rich people, poor people, and beggars. Among the many attractions of the Portas de Santo Antão are: the Coliseu dos Recreios, the Casa do Alentejo, the Politeama theater, the Ateneu Comercial de Lisboa and the largo da Anunciada.

AMOREIRAS SHOPPING CENTER
Controversial! The Amoreiras shopping center was the most controversial Lisbon construction of the 80’s (it opened its doors on September 27, 1985). The no less controversial Tomás Taveira was the architect who thought and designed the Amoreiras building. A type of “out of the box” construction that was completely out of sync with the surrounding area in the Lisbon of the 1980s.
Over time the Amoreiras shopping center has gone through different phases. Some good, some not so bright. But it endured. And today it is a place with personality. A sober and elegant center, I feel good in Amoreiras, I feel at home! From Eduardo VII Park to the shopping center of Amoreiras it’s only a 10 minute walk.

CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN FOUNDATION
The foundation was founded by Calouste Gulbenkian in 1956. It is dedicated to the defense and promotion of Art, science, education and charity. At “Gulbenkian”, as it is commonly called, there is a lot to see and do. Start by walking in the gardens that surround the building. A perfect place to relax, breathe, and even to organize a picnic. The Gulbenkian gardens were designed as a celebration of Portugal’s landscape. The museum and the Modern Art center! They are a must-see! There we find works by famous artists such as Monet and Rembrandt.
