The Ribeira Market (time out Market) was recently revitalized and renovated! In bygone times it was called Mercado 24 de Julho. Since 1892 it has been the king of the capital’s markets and is now one of the coolest places in Lisbon!

WHERE IS THE TIME OUT MARKET IN LISBON?

It is located in a very central area of Lisbon (3 minutes walk from Cais do Sodré). To get there you have at your disposal the Metro (3 minutes walk), buses, trains and trams.

TIME OUT MARKET – EVOLUTION

It was in the year 1600 that the Market of Ribeira was born in front of the house of Bicos (today José Saramago foundation). Over time the space was rebuilt and renovated more than once. Let’s see…

In 1755, Lisbon was hit by a huge earthquake that destroyed, among many other things, the Ribeira market building. In 1893, a huge fire damaged the east side of the building. In 1980 the bird slaughterhouse that operated there was extinguished. In 1983 a large number of new shops were built. In 1999 the big clock in the market is renewed and the time comes back!

CLOCK TIME OUT MARKET

In 2000, with the opening of MARL (the supply market for the Lisbon region), the market ceases to be a wholesale market (a wholesale market usually does not work with final consumers).

In 2001, the 1st floor is renovated and an event room and restaurant are built there. In 2013, as a result of works carried out in the Dom Luis square, Roman remains from the 1st to 5th centuries BC are discovered.

In 2013 the works of the then called “Time Out Market” will start. On May 18, 2014 the market as we know it today will be inaugurated.

WHAT’S INSIDE THE TIME OUT MARKET?

There are many attractions you will find in this market. Restaurants of Portuguese (and other) cuisine, bars, pastries, kiosks with fruit, meat, fish and vegetables. But there is also room for a show room, esplanades and souvenir shops at the ribeira market.

Restaurants are the main attraction! There we find famous restaurants led by TOP chefs! The “time out market” is very sought after by Portuguese, but also by foreign tourists. Prices can be a little higher than in an average restaurant in Lisbon. Still, it is possible to find some interesting offers for a price of £15-20 per person.

If you are a lover of typical Portuguese food, you will be delighted with the variety on offer. But if you prefer Brazilian or Italian dishes, you will also find many restaurants that will satisfy you!

GROUND FLOOR – TIME OUT MARKET

This is where you will find the freshest fish in Lisbon! This is where many restaurants (and top chefs) stock up on the best the ocean has to offer. The stalls are open from 6am to 2pm.

The restaurant area is also on the ground floor but on the west side. The configuration of the space is “sui generis”, a kind of giant canteen with long tables that serve the enormous variety and quantity of stalls (restaurants).
