The answer is… It depends on many different factors and scenarios.
If you have a strong background in Spanish or Italian, it will be quite easy for you to understand what Portuguese people say. However, it will be very hard for these students to “lose” the Spanish/Italian accent that will affect their Portuguese pronunciation. After 6-9 months of hard work, many students can reach level B1 in Portuguese.
For those students, learning Portuguese in Lisbon is usually a rather straightforward process. Learning a third language is always easier than learning a second language. These students are already comfortable with many concepts, such as verbs, regular and irregular verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and prepositions. After 9-12 months, due to their effort, many students can already resolve 90% of their problems in Portuguese (in one-on-one conversations) – reaching B1/B2 proficiency. However, in group situations, with noise and Portuguese native speakers speaking very quickly, these students may still encounter difficulties.
For this final group, we have many different examples. We have several students who, after 1 year, are finishing at level B1. However, we also have other Portuguese students who struggle to maintain a simple conversation after 12 months (which means that they are still at A2 level).
In conclusion, it really depends on your background and also on the following decisions:
1.The number of hours per week that you will spend learning Portuguese.
2.The materials that you will use.
3.The teacher that you are going to choose.
4.How much you will enjoy your Portuguese lessons and how eager you are to start speaking the language.
5.Your personality. Extroverted people tend to learn Portuguese faster because they are not afraid of making mistakes.

Highly recommend this language class if you want to learn Portuguese and see immediate improvements & a sense of achievement! I took the A1 intensive course, it really helped me start speaking and improve my reading and listening skills. The classes were well structured, striking the perfect balance between grammar/theory and practical, 'everyday Portuguese' with lots of speaking practice. I especially enjoyed the focus on pronunciation, which made a big difference in my comprehension. Plus, it was fun! Definitely continuing with the A2 course. The small class sizes allowed for both group development and lots of individual attention, and, along with grammar and vocabulary, Frederico provided us with useful insights on the country and culture. I highly recommend this service. Kel Kelly2025-07-17Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I just completed the A1 Portuguese course and there are no words to describe the happiness and gratitude I feel. I am in my 60s and the other students were much younger and had the benefit of speaking multiple languages. Despite that, Frederico was able to conduct the class to ensure all learners benefitted from the content regardless of their starting point. His online content of Quizlets, podcasts, readings, and interrogation rooms helps solidify the recall and retention of the material taught in class. The course is a solid grammar foundation on which you can build your Portuguese language skills. Instead of just seeing and memorizing words, you will walk away with an understanding of the grammar that drives them. I highly and enthusiastically recommend this course to anyone! Frederico is an excellent teacher - the class was paced perfectly, he is respectful of all students and he provides a non-judgmental learning environment. The class size is small which is perfect. The class had a mix of students from monolingual to multilingual and Frederico intergrated all of us into this A1 course seemlessly. I plan on continuing study with him at Lisbon Language Café... We are now able to speak basic sentences in our daily life and to understand quite a bit, both when reading and listening. We will all be hading for the A2 course soon. We cannot recommend LisbonLanguageCafe and Frederico enough, it has been the best fast track to starting a new language that we could have ever imagined.
